Cetane Enhancers

Diesel specifications do not limit the use of cetane improvers in Southern Africa.

The cetane improver 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) was frequently used in South Africa from 2011 to 2017 in both grades of diesel, in concentrations up to 1,850 mg/kg in 2016. Its concentration dropped in the subsequent year, and it was not detected in concentrations higher than 10 mg/kg in samples in 2018.

EHN contentration was not measured in the samples of the other Southern African countries.
