The table below summarizes the situation per country regarding the legislative limits on vehicles’ exhaust emissions, restriction in imported vehicles and composition of the vehicles fleet.

South Africa has a significant vehicle manufacturing industry. The OEMs manufacturing in South Africa are BMW, Ford, Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. The other major brands are imported. In 2015, diesel passenger vehicles amounted to 17% of the passenger vehicles fleet, and gasoline to 83%. Electric vehicles amounted to less than 0.1% of the fleet.

In the other countries, assembly activity is minimal and mostly involves final assembly of partly assembled vehicles. Vehicles are primarily imported through the port of Durban, from Japan and from the Middle East.
