According to SGS Nigeria, sulfur content in diesel from 2013 to 2023 was below 3,000 mg/kg. In 2021 and 2023, the diesel samples contained on average sulfur content below 2,000 mg/kg. Even though the sulfur content is below the 3,000 mg/kg limit of standard NIS 149:2006 - Standard for Diesel fuel (AGO), the actual sulfur level found in diesel shows that Nigeria is still far from the 50 mg/kg limit approved in the NIS 948:2017- Standard for diesel fuel (AGO) standard. The maximum regulatory limit of NIS 948:2017 standard has been enforced from beginning of 2024, but the level of sulfur in diesel is not expected to meet these regulatory limits until 2025 realistically.
