Technologies, such as thermochemical (Gasification + Fischer-Tropsch), pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction to produce synthetic diesel (also syn-diesel) from lingo and non-lingo cellulosic materials, have been available for many years now. However, the conventional fossil and biofuel production costs outcompeted the synthetic diesel production in the European Union. Moreover, the renewable energy mandate, the life cycle GHG emission reduction target and the member states’ policy frameworks were designed in a way that did not promote the use of synthetic fuels until 2020.
