Recent developments
In November 2022, Saudi Arabia’s state-owned petroleum company, Saudi Aramco commenced at the newly constructed Jazan refinery. This refinery has a 400,000 barrels/day crude petroleum refining capacity and produces low sulfur fuels, such as gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel.
In January 2023, the Saudi Arabia government implemented a new national gasoline standard, SASO 1951: 2023 which sets new limits for sulfur, benzene, olefins content and final boiling points. It replaces the previous gasoline standard, SASO 1951: 2017. In addition, this new standard introduces a limit for aromatics. This standard is currently in line with the Euro 5-enabling gasoline standard.
