The Bapco Modernization Program, a major expansion and upgrade of the Bapco Energies’ Sitra refinery that will increase the processing capacity to 380,000 barrels per day, is planned to be commissioned in the second half of 2024.

The current diesel quality has already been meeting Euro 5-enabling diesel specifications. Thus, SGS INSPIRE does not expect the quality of diesel to improve further. However, diesel production volume and exports will likely increase soon.

At the same time, SGS INSPIRE does not expect Bahrain to allow biodiesel blending in on-road diesel. However, this option will still open for diesel used in nonroad and stationary engines where the addition of used cooking oil-based biodiesel may help to reduce carbon emissions from those sectors.
