Production capacity
In China, hydrogen gas is typically produced from coal, natural gas, industrial by-products and electrolysis of water. In 2023, coal-based hydrogen accounted for 63% of total hydrogen production, followed by natural gas at 20.9% and industrial by-products at 19.5%. Hydrogen gas produced from water electrolysis only accounted for 2% of total hydrogen production. As of September 2023, China’s total hydrogen nameplate production capacity is 49 million tonnes/year, the largest in the world. It was increased by 32.7% compared with 2021.
The figure below shows the hydrogen nameplate production capacity.
