Sustainability and Other Requirements for Biofuels

California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) does not introduce sustainability requirements that could be directly compared with those required by the EU Renewable Energy Directive.

According to the LCFS, obligated party must ensure that the carbon intensity of fuels delivered to the market meets the annual requirement established by the regulation, presented in the previous chapter on figure. For 2022 benchmark carbon intensity for diesel fuels is 90.41 gCO2eq/MJ and for 2023 it is 89.15 gCO2eq/MJ. Fuels with higher carbon intensity will generate deficit and fuels with lower carbon intensity will generate credits.
