Policy on renewable energy in transportation

Washington joins the North American States of California, Oregon and British Columbia, which have adopted similar programs for transitioning to low-carbon fuels by setting clean fuel standards (CFS). Washington’s CFS will work beside the Climate Commitment Act, which requires the State to reduce its carbon emissions by 95% by 2050.

The CFS takes a life cycle approach equivalent to the sum of all greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted through each stage of a fuel´s production process and use, also known as the “Well to Wheel” analysis for fuel.
