Value added tax (VAT) on fuels and other goods is 18% in Tanzania. There are two additional levies on gasoline: a fuel levy and a petroleum levy. In the tax year 2021/2022, the fuel levy on gasoline and diesel was charged at a rate of TZS 413 (USD 0.18) per liter, and the petroleum levy at TZS 100 (USD 0.043) per liter.

In March 2022, Tanzania suspended the petroleum levy for three months, until May 2022, to reduce fuel prices for consumers amid fuel cost increases following the Russia-Ukraine war.
