Octane enhancers
Gasoline’s octane rating depends on the quality of the crude petroleum and the refining process. To ensure that minimum octane number requirements are met, refiners may add octane enhancers or boosters.
Refiners use many types of octane enhancer:
•Organic:
•Alcohol and ethers, including methanol, methyl tert-butyl ether, ethyl tert-butyl ether, etc.
•Aromatic amines/oxygenates (which burn ash-free)
•Non-organic:
This section provides an overview of octane enhancers found in Sri Lanka’s gasoline samples.
