Kitchen waste oil and fats are the major feedstocks used to produce biodiesel in China. They are defined as any oily waste from commercial kitchens, including used cooking oils (UCO), grease traps, gutter oil, and yellow grease. Typically, China’s UCO collectors collect kitchen waste oil and fats from the catering industry and pre-process it into clean UCO, or further process it into pure biodiesel (B100).

The Chinese government estimated that the total volume of kitchen waste oil and fats produced in 2021 was 12 million tonnes. However, the consumption of kitchen waste oil and fats was only 3 million tonnes in 2021, accounting for 25% of total production.
