RIN nesting
Renewable identification Number (RIN) nesting refers to the hierarchical structure of RINs within the different categories of renewable fuels. This nesting allows for certain types of RIN to be used to meet compliance for multiple categories, providing flexibility to obligated parties.
Types of RIN nesting are:
•D3 RINs: can fulfill obligations for D3, D5 and D6 categories
•D4 RINs: can fulfill obligations for D4, D5 and D6 categories
•D5 RINs: can fulfill obligations for D5 and D6 categories
•D6 RINs: can only fulfill obligations for the D6 category
•D7 RINs: can fulfill obligations for D7, D3 or D4 (but not both), D5 and D6 categories
