Recent developments

In January 2024, the Government of National Unity (GNU) proposed to restructure the fuel subsidies mechanism in the country. On December 25, 2024, there were reports of further initiatives from the Eastern-based government of Libya to end fuel subsidies. However, with the main government (GNU) facing political instability (conflicts between political heads of East and West parts of the country) and limited mandate, these measures have not been implemented yet.
