On May 27, 2024, X-press Feeders, in collaboration with Global Energy Trading (GET) and PSA Singapore, successfully executed the first simultaneous methanol bunkering and cargo operation () at Tuas Port in Singapore. This innovative operation involved supplying methanol fuel while the container vessel completed container moves, thereby enhancing operational efficiency.
The SIMOPS was completed within four hours, supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), various government agencies, and a local research institute. During this operation, the MPA-licensed bunker supplier utilized the tanker MT Kara to refuel the Stena Prosperous with 1,340 tonnes of ISCC-certified bio-methanol. This bio-methanol, produced by OCI Global and stored at Vopak Penjuru Terminal, was then supplied by GET.
In July 2023, the world's first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering took place at Singapore’s Raffles Reserved Anchorage. Hong Lam Marine used its bunker tanker to refuel Maersk’s container vessel, Copenhagen, with a total of 300 tonnes of bio-methanol.
These bunkering operations mark a significant milestone for Singapore’s port, demonstrating its readiness for commercial-scale operations involving shore-to-ship, ship-to-ship, and SIMOPS. The port's capabilities also extend to ammonia fuel bunkering.
In March 2024, the world’s first ammonia bunkering operation was conducted at Jurong Island in Singapore. (see news articles dated )
