INSPIRE-ing Energy Talks: Ep.11 - Biogas for cleaner heavy-duty transport: opportunities & obstacles

SGS INSPIRE Claire Couet interviewed Anna Venturini, Policy Director at the European Biogas Association (EBA), and Giuseppe Welz, expert in alternative propulsion and gas business development at IVECO Group, to explore the role of biogas and biomethane in the transport sector. The discussion covered regulatory challenges, market opportunities, and the potential for these fuels to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and shipping. Venturini and Welz emphasized that biomethane-powered trucks and buses offer an immediate pathway to reducing emissions in road transport. Currently, 23% of the biomethane produced in the EU is used in transport, but EBA sees significant potential for growth. IVECO highlighted that gas adoption in the heavy-duty vehicle segment has been steadily progressing, with gas trucks presenting the most viable alternative to diesel, thanks to an established refueling infrastructure across Europe. EBA also pointed to the maritime sector as a key area for biomethane expansion, estimating that compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation will require 5 BCM (billion cubic meters) of biomethane by 2030. Both experts agreed that biogas and biomethane not only support emissions reduction but also help lower fuel import costs and enhance the EU's energy security by leveraging locally produced renewable energy sources. IVECO commented that the main barrier to the growth in biogas use for transport within the EU is policy fragmentation.
