On March 15, 2024, Singapore witnessed the inaugural ammonia bunkering operation at the Vopak Banyan Terminal on Jurong Island. This bunkering initiative was a trial run, conducted by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) in collaboration with several parties. The vessel involved in this operation is the Fortescue Green Pioneer, owned by the Australian-based mining company, Fortescue.
The Fortescue Green Pioneer is a dual-fuel vessel, utilizing a combination of ammonia and diesel. The MPA reported that this fuel trial spanned seven weeks and encompassed assessments on ammonia storage systems, associated piping, gas fuel delivery systems, retrofitted engines and seaworthiness.
