EU: lawmakers likely to revise 2035 combustion car ban

Regulation (EU) 2023/851, amending Regulation (EU) 2019/631 as regards strengthening the CO2 emission performance standards for new passenger cars and new light commercial vehicles in line with the Union’s increased climate ambition, came into force on May 9, 2023. According to this regulation, starting January 1, 2035, the EU light-duty fleet must achieve a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions. Additionally, Regulation (EU) 2024/1610, amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1242 as regards strengthening the CO2 emission performance standards for new heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) and integrating reporting obligations, amending Regulation (EU) 2018/858 and repealing Regulation (EU) 2018/956, is effective from July 1, 2024.
