According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. biofuels operable production capacity reached 95.1 billion liters in the first half of 2024, marking a 5.7% increase compared to December 2023. Of the total biofuels operable production capacity, fuel ethanol accounted for 72.5%, renewable diesel for 19.5%, and biodiesel for the remaining 8.0%.
Renewable diesel experienced the largest growth in operable production capacity, expanding by 27% since December 2023 to reach 18.5 million liters. This increase was driven by supportive policies, such as tax credits and low-carbon fuel standards, growing demand for low-emission fuels, and the addition of five new renewable diesel plants.
