On November 11, 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) published a Policy to expand the introduction of bioethanol in gasoline at the 17th Resources and Fuel Subcommittee, Decarbonization Fuel Policy Subcommittee meeting.
Under this policy, the government aims to introduce E10 (gasoline containing up to 10% v/v ethanol) by 2030. It also aims to begin discussions on an E20 (gasoline containing up to 20% v/v ethanol) vehicle certification system. By the early 2030s, it expects all new passenger car sales will be compatible with E20.
