EU: European Commission adopts voluntary certification schemes for renewable and low-carbon fuels

On December 19, 2024, the European Commission (EC) adopted three critical implementing decisions recognizing voluntary schemes for renewable and low-carbon fuels. These decisions aim to bolster compliance with Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (Renewable Energy Directive or RED), reinforcing sustainability, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings, and transparency standards across the EU's renewable energy sector.

1. REDcert-EU: the Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/3194 formally recognizes the REDcert-EU voluntary scheme, which ensures compliance with RED's sustainability and GHG emissions savings requirements.
