EU: adoption of new rules on the ETS support system to accelerate the use of sustainable aviation fuels

On February 6, 2025, European Commission (EC) delegated regulation supplementing Directive 2003/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council by laying down detailed rules for the yearly calculation of price differences between eligible aviation fuels and fossil kerosene and for the EU ETS allocation of allowances for the use of eligible aviation fuels. It defines the rules for allocating EU ETS allowances to commercial aircraft operators using these eligible fuels from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2030. The aim of this initiative is to incentivize the early uptake of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in the aviation sector and support commercial aircraft operators with the use of these fuels on ro
