On April 15, Washington State Senate passed House Bill 1409, a measure aimed at strengthening the state’s Clean Fuels Standard (CFS) by setting more ambitious greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets for the transportation sector.
The bill updates the current CFS, which mandates a 20% reduction in GHG emissions by 2034 relative to a 2017 baseline. Under HB 1409, the target increases significantly to a 45% reduction by 2038, with the first increase taking effect as early as 2026.
