On April 6, 2025, the UK's Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, announced that the phase out of new gasoline and diesel car sales with only internal combustion engines (ICE) will start from 2030, rather than 2035 as per the previous government's target. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) may now be sold until 2035. The sale of new vans powered by gasoline and diesel with ICE technology, and new vans with hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and PHEVs technologies will also be allowed until 2035.
Following an extensive public consultation, from December 2024 to February 2025, and engagement with stakeholders, other flexibilities were given to allow more time for the uptake of electric vehicles in the country.
