SGS INSPIRE has recently learned that in May 2025, Air New Zealand published its 2030 Emissions Guidance, setting a target of a 20-25% reduction in well-to-wake (WTW) net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, compared to the 2019 baseline. Under this new guidance, the emissions reduction is based on net emissions rather than the 28.9% reduction on an intensity basis, as per the Science Based Targets initiative, which was withdrawn in July 2024.
The airline’s WTW emissions from aviation fuel accounted for 92% of its total GHG emissions in financial year 2024. WTW emissions are defined as total emissions from aviation fuel, including production, distribution and combustion in flight.
