Indonesia: Pertamina's first UCO-based SAF delivered to Pelita Air ahead of the mandatory SAF blending in 2027

At the beginning of August 2025, Pertamina's Cilacap refinery produced its first batch of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil (UCO). A total of 32,000 liters was delivered to Pelita Air for its flight from Jakarta to Bali. Pelita Air, a Pertamina-owned airline, just changed its status from a corporate to commercial airline earlier this year.

According to Pertamina, the Cilacap refinery is currently targeting production of up to 9,000 barrels per day (b/d) of SAF blend, containing up to 3% v/v of SAF. At present, the refinery uses co-processing technology, which means that to produce 9,000 b/d of SAF blend, Pertamina needs about 270 b/d (42,930 liters per day) of UCO.
