Recent developments
On January 1, 2025, the maximum sulfur limit in RON 91 gasoline was reduced to 350 mg/kg. Therefore, based on the maximum sulfur limit, three grades of gasoline are sold in Indonesia:
•50 mg/kg (RON 95, 95 with 5% v/v ethanol (E5), and RON 98)
•350 mg/kg (RON 91)
•500 mg/kg (RON 90)
RON 95 E5 has been sold on the market since July 2023 (see news article dated ). At the end of 2024, it has been available in 105 fuel stations on Java Island. Indonesia’s national oil company, Pertamina, plans to increase RON 95 E5 availability to 200 fuel stations. However, the lack of ethanol availability has become a major hindrance.
