Recent developments
The current fuel quality requirements were introduced in 2006 in the Clean Fuels 1 (CF1) regulations.
The current gasoline specifications for requirements relating to CF1 are set in the standard SANS 1598:2014.
The next stage of the clean fuels regulations, CF2, was scheduled to enter in force in 2017. However, this did not happen. Delay in the implementation of the CF2 is due to ongoing discussions between the vehicle industry and refiners, notably about financing the upgrade of the refineries to produce low-sulfur fuel. Following the publication of official Government Gazette on June 24, 2022, the implementation of new fuel quality requirements is expected to be from July 1, 2027.
