Timeline for sulfur reduction
Although the upcoming Clean Fuels 2 (CF2) fuels quality reform will require a sulfur content of 10 mg/kg in gasoline, gasoline with 10 mg/kg sulfur is not widely produced nor consumed in South Africa. According to SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey data, the sulfur content in gasoline (both metal-free and metal-containing) is around 200 mg/kg (below the 500 mg/kg regulatory limit for metal-free gasoline and 1,500 mg/kg for metal-containing gasoline). SGS INSPIRE expects this trend in sulfur levels to continue (or decrease) before gasoline 10 mg/kg starts to enter the market. The new sulfur limit is expected to be implemented from July 1, 2027, according to the publication of official Government Gazette on June 24, 2022.
