Exports and imports
Viet Nam is a net crude petroleum exporter but a net diesel importer.
According to the General Department of Customs, about 5.4 million tonnes of diesel were imported in 2023, about 14% more than imports in 2022, but 89% more than 2021.
In 2021, diesel demand declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and refined petroleum product storage overflowed. Hence, imports were reduced.
Diesel export data is not available. However, the country exported about 2.36 million tonnes of refined petroleum products in 2023. The figure below shows diesel imports and refined product exports from 2018-2023.
