Biodiesel
The voluntary diesel specification under JIS 2204:2007 does not set any limits for biodiesel or fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content in diesel. However, Japan’s diesel specifications under the Act on Quality Control of Gasoline and Other Fuels sets a maximum limit for FAME at 0.1% m/m in conventional diesel and 5% m/m in diesel containing biodiesel.
Note that in Japan, diesel containing biodiesel of up to 5% v/v (B5) is sold in bulk directly to transportation companies and municipal fleet in several cities including Kyoto. Thus, SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey results on diesel samples taken from fuel stations in 2011-2021 showed that no FAME was found in any sample.
