Supply and demand
According to International Energy Agency (IEA) data, since 2011, diesel consumption in Nigeria has increased nearly sixfold, to about 164,565 terajoules (TJ) in 2021 . In 2020, demand dropped due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the creation of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in August 2021, annual reports on diesel consumption and production have not been published. Prior to this date, the now defunct Department of Petroleum Resources was publishing this data.
