Regulations
South Africa is the only country of Africa producing synthetic-based fuels out of the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, but they are not regulated in any specific way. The distillates produced with the FT process have a sulfur content below 5 ppm. Gas-to-liquid (GTL) and coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels are based on the conversion of natural gas or coal to synthesis gas, also called syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Syngas can be converted to a range of synthetic fuels and chemical products through the FT process.
