Retail price
In 2015, the Moroccan government introduced a tax system that benefited the only domestic producer – the Samir refinery – which produced only diesel fuel. Gasoline used to be taxed 55% more than diesel.
This boosted the trend towards diesel in Morocco. However, the price difference between gasoline and diesel has been decreasing over recent years. In 2015, the diesel price was 80% of the gasoline price, whereas in September 2020 the price difference was approximately 12%.
The figure below shows the slow increase in retail gasoline price per liter from 2016 onwards in Moroccan dirhams (MAD) and U.S. dollars (USD).
