Octane enhancers
Depending on the crude oil quality and refinery process, gasoline produced by the refineries may not necessarily meet the minimum octane level required by the specifications. Hence, refiners add octane enhancers to gasoline. There are many types of octane enhancers commonly used by refiners:
•Organic octane enhancers
•Non-organic octane enhancers
In Qatar, methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE) is the major octane enhancer used since 2015. We noted a small and single use of methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH).
Ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), tert-Amyl methyl ether (TAME) and tert-Amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) were absent from all gasoline samples.
