Subsidies
To promote the uptake of zero emission vehicles, including electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) and fuel cell EV (FCEV), the government uses subsidies as the main policy tools.
Two types of subsidy are used: (1) purchase subsidy and (2) subsidy for installation/construction of charging and/or hydrogen refueling facilities.
In fiscal year 2017, the purchase subsidy for EV was USD 10/km x maximum range on a full charge (km). For example, the purchase subsidy would be USD 4,000 for Nissan Leaf. For PHEV, the purchase subsidy was fixed at USD 2,000. This purchase subsidy continues until today. The table below shows the maximum purchase subsidy as of October 2021.
