Refining
Tanzania’s government has signed a one-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Noor Oil of Qatar for the construction of an oil refinery and a 1200-km long pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza. If the pipeline project is successful, it could be extended to Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda in the future.
Prior to this, the country’s only refinery closed in the mid-1990s when the Tanzanian and Italian Petroleum Refining Co (TIPER) ceased production. It had been operating since 1969, and had capacity of 875,000 tonnes per year - though it operated at only 60% capacity.
