Recent developments
In 2019, the Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) published the country’s most recent regular gasoline specification, . It increased the octane number from 87 to 89 and reduced the maximum sulfur limit from 500 mg/kg to 300 mg/kg.
Since 2020, the BSTI Institute has allowed petroleum refineries to produce lower grade gasoline that does not comply with the national gasoline standard, a change requested by the Petrochemical and Refiners Association of Bangladesh.
In August 2022, the government updated the gasoline retail price after six years. As a result the gasoline price increased 51%, mainly a direct impact of the global energy crisis and Russia-Ukraine war.
