Recent developments
In June 2019, the Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) published the latest national light diesel oil (LDO) fuel specification, , which reduced the maximum sulfur limit for LDO from 15,000 mg/kg to 2,500 mg/kg.
In October 2020, the BSTI published the latest national high-speed diesel (HSD) fuel specification, , introducing a Type I diesel fuel specification for imported diesel, and reducing the maximum sulfur limit from 500 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg for Type I diesel and to 350 mg/kg for Type II diesel (domestically produced).
In August 2022, the government increased the HSD retail price by 42.5%. This rise has been mainly influenced by the global energy crisis and the Russia-Ukraine war.
