Cetane enhancers
Cetane enhancers are fuel additives that improve the cetane number in diesel fuel. In general, producing diesel with a high cetane number diesel requires a high volume of heavy crude petroleum during the refining process. Thus, some refineries instead add cetane improvers.
2-ethylhexyl nitrate (2-EHN) is the most common cetane improver. However, this additive tends to increase diesel’s nitrogen content. In Bangladesh, national diesel specification, does not regulate 2-EHN content.
SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey results from diesel samples taken in 2011-2019 show only samples taken in 2015 had high 2-EHN content, other samples had only trace level 2-EHN.
