Total Acid Number
The total acid number (TAN) is the quantity of base potassium hydroxide (KOH) which neutralizes the acid within a sample. Argentine Resolution 689/2022, of October 12, 2022, sets a 0.5 mgKOH/g maximum limit for TAN. It is a measure of the corrosiveness of the hydrocarbons due to the presence of acids, particularly naphthenic acids. In this sense, the SGS Worldwide Fuel Survey (WWFS) results reveal a national average of 0.12 mg KOH/g from 2010 to 2022 in diesel, with a maximum value of 0.50 mg KOH/g found in 2013 in Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut province) in a sample of diesel grade 2.
