Regulations
This section provides an overview about the legislative requirements for octane and ethanol grades in Europe. The EU have among the tightest quality parameters for gasoline in the world. In 2023-2024, the EU is planning to review fuel (both gasoline and diesel) quality requirements, which might result in additional regulations. For gasoline, there were proposals from the European Commission (EC) to allow higher ethanol content in gasoline such as E85 (85% v/v of ethanol and 15% v/v gasoline), ED95 (95% v/v ethanol and 5% v/v of ignition improver) and M85 (85% v/v methanol and 15% v/v gasoline) by 2030. In terms of octane number, the EC is not planning to mandate for research octane number (RON) of 98 or 102 for gasoline as part of the EU revision.
