Bioethanol
Neat ethanol to be blended with gasoline in Japan must meet specifications set out in the Japanese Industrial Standards JIS K 2190:2011 – Ethanol as a blending component for petrol.
Under this specification, the minimum alcohol content is set at 99.5% v/v, and the maximum methanol content is set at 4.0 g/l. In addition, a maximum limit for oxygenates, excluding methanol, is set at 10 g/l. Furthermore, the specification states that fuel ethanol cannot contain a high amount of organic contamination such as methanol, 2-propanol, acetaldehyde, cyclohexane, n-pentane, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1-methyl-1-butanol or acetone.
More information on the specification JIS K 2190:2011 is available in the SGS INSPIRE fuel specifications database.
