Fuel ethanol in Japan was produced from domestic long-grain rice and imported corn. However, domestic production of fuel ethanol is currently almost non-existent.
Domestic bio-ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is produced from imported ethanol from Brazil and the U.S. Moreover, Japan imports bio-ETBE from the U.S. that is produced from Brazil sugarcane-based and/or U.S. corn-based ethanol. Moreover, ethanol for direct blending with gasoline is imported from Braziil.
