Production capacity
In France, bio-based gasoline production capacity has remained between 800,000 tonnes and almost 990,000 tonnes from 2016 to 2023.
France is the leading ethanol producer in the EU and growth in demand has been backed by domestic consumption.
Ethanol accounts for over 90% of all bio-based gasoline produced in France, while the remaining part is represented by ETBE (ethyl tert-butyl ether).
Sugar beet and cereals like wheat and corn are the major feedstocks utilized in France for the production of ethanol. Additionally, certain wine residues such as grape marc and wine lees are also used to produce bioethanol.
