RIN generation by fuel type
Historically non-cellulosic ethanol has consistently been the dominant source of RINs, though its share has steadily declined over the years from 95% in 2010 to approximately 60% in 2024. Biodiesel maintained a significant portion of RIN generation but has also seen a slight decrease in its share from 18% to 13%. Renewable diesel, on the other hand, has increased its contribution significantly, especially from 2018 from 5% to more than 23% in 2024, reflecting the growth in its production capacity. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) remains a minor contributor with a share between 1% to 3%.
