Africa is mainly dependent on fossil fuels in the maritime sector. Many African countries are members of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO). Botswana was the most recent country joining IMO as a member in 2021. Hence, those countries mainly follow IMO’s regulations.

There are no publicly announced vessel trials in African ports for methanol as marine fuel. However, there is interest for future plans.
