Overview
In 2023, the EU sanctions on Russia resulted in most of Russia’s petroleum and gas exports going to China and India, with about 1/4 to countries in the global East and South, including Brazil and Türkiye.
The European Union focused on finalizing the Fit-for-55 package, however, several European countries hit a brake on their efforts to promote renewable fuels amid high fuel prices and living costs.
In Africa, most refineries were operating even though some have stopped due to lack of investments and heavy reliance on fuel imports.
In Asia and Oceania, more and more refineries started using alternative feedstocks including used cooking oils, animal fats, vegetable oils, and waste plastics-based pyrolysis oil to produce gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and other petrochemical feedstocks.
North American countries have been working on their transition towards a cleaner and low-carbon fuel mix. Both the US and Canada have promoted electric vehicle (EVs) adoption.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, biofuel production will likely increase as governments plan to increase biofuel mandates in 2024.
Many governments across the globe, including in Africa, announced their intention to develop hydrogen projects. However, most aim to further process hydrogen into renewable ammonia for easy transport or into methanol to be processed further into e-fuels.
Will we see new developments related to fuel quality and emission regulations in 2024? Will there be new incentives for EV uptake? For which renewable fuel do we expect an increase in demand and supply? Biofuels, hydrogen, hydrogen-based fuels?
Agenda:
○ Current fuel quality and emission regulations
○ Refineries updates
○ What 2024 will bring in fuel quality regulations and market
○ 2024 Global forecast
