Comment on this paragraph On March 20, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a final rule for the Multi-Pollutant Emissions Standards for Model Years 2027 and Later Light-Duty (LD) and Medium-Duty (MD) Vehicles, which sets new standards to reduce air pollutant emissions from light-duty and medium-duty vehicles starting with model year 2027.
Comment on this paragraph This new standard aims to significantly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NOX), and particulate matter (PM2.5).
Comment on this paragraph For light-duty vehicles, the standards target an industry-wide average of 85 grams per mile (g/mile) of CO2 by the model year 2032, which reflects a nearly 50% reduction from the projected emissions levels under the current standards for the model year 2026.

Comment on this paragraph For medium-duty vehicles, the expected outcome is an average emission of 274 g/mile of CO2 by model year 2032, marking a 44% decrease compared to the model year 2026 standards.

Comment on this paragraph Additionally, the EPA has introduced the "Tier 4" pollutant emissions standards for non-methane organic gases (NMOG), NOX, and PM among other pollutants. For LDVs, the Tier 4 NMOG+NOX standards will require a reduction to a fleet average of 15 mg/mile by 2032, a 50% cut from the current 30 mg/mile under the Tier 3 standards. Medium-duty vehicles will be required a fleet average level of 75 mg/mile by 2033, which represents a reduction of 58% to 70% from the existing Tier 3 standards.

Comment on this paragraph The Tier 4 standards include phase-in implementation schedules to give manufacturers additional time to adjust their product plans and apply new technologies to vehicles. For light-duty vehicles and trucks 20% of vehicles must meet Tier 4 standards in 2027, 40% in 2028, 60% in 2029, and 100% in 2030.
