Timeline for sulfur reduction
No announcements have been made regarding the future reduction of sulfur content in gasoline, or concerning future revisions of the national standards. In Mexico, the state-owned petroleum company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) operates all the refineries and is the only local producer of gasoline. Due to shortages in refinery operations, gasoline has been increasingly imported in recent years, mainly from the U.S., to fulfill local demand.
According to the latest applicable fuel standard, the maximum sulfur content per specific batch is 80 mg/kg for both premium and regular gasoline nationally, and the maximum average annual sulfur content limit has been 30 mg/kg since October 2016. However, this was achieved in 2018.
